Concept Statement–As baby boomers increasingly enter their senior years, characterized by either retirement or (more likely) second careers, the largest cohort in American history, the one that has driven popular culture for the last half of the twentieth century, is graying. Arguably artistic, intellectual, and leisure pursuits are also beginning to reflect the tastes and attitudes of the more mature even when the members of this group attempt to recapture their youth. This PCA Area is the place for explorations of this group’s life-styles, mores, organizations, and efforts at re-invention. It also serves as the home for historical studies on the depiction, treatment, and place of the aged in the past, both in the United States and within other countries.
Mission Statement–The purpose of this area within the Popular Culture Association is to sponsor panels, often comparative in nature across regions and countries, on the life-styles, mores, leisure, organizations, depiction, and treatment of those aged 50 and over both in the past and the present.
