CALL FOR PROPOSALS: SESSIONS, PANELS, PAPERS
NATIONAL POPULAR CULTURE & AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATIONS 2009 CONFERENCE
April 8- 11, 2009

We are considering proposals for sessions organized around a theme, special panels, and/or individual papers. Sessions are scheduled in 1½ hour slots, typically with four papers or speakers per standard session.
We welcome papers on the cultural impacts, media representations and history of disasters in any part of the world. Themes include:
Disasters in literature, television and movies
News of disaster
The "shock doctrine" and disaster capitalism
The imagination of worst case scenarios
The social construction and meanings of disaster
Testimonies and eyewitness accounts in the Internet age
Disaster tourism
Monuments and memorials
Should you or any of your colleagues be interested in submitting a proposal or have any questions, please contact the area chair (see below).
Submit a one-page (150-250 word) proposal or abstract (via regular mail or e-mail) by November 30, 2008
